Amherst Regional School Committee
Tonight (May 23, 2000) the Amherst Regional School Committee passed the
following resolution which they are requesting to be considered at the annual
meeting of the Mass Association of School Committees in November. To get on the
agenda these same resolutions need to be passed by 5 other school committees,
including atleast one in the eastern part of the state. All of this needs to be
done by July 1. Therefore the resolutions were passed without a supporting
statement. A small committee of parents and school committee members will
continue to work on the statement which the school committee will consider at a
future meeting.
These resolutions speak to high stakes nature of the MCAS test.
RESOLVED: That the Massachusetts Association of School Committees opposes the
use of a passing on the 10th grade MCAS tests as a requirement for graduation
from high school and urges the Board of Education not to link MCAS test results
with the granting of high school diplomas.
